BCPS eligibility: the two routes to sitting the exam

BCPS requirements come down to three conditions, and you need all three: a qualifying pharmacy degree, a current license, and within the past 7 years either a completed PGY1 residency or at least 3 years of pharmacotherapy practice (BPS BCPS examination specifications, as of October 27, 2026). Residency is one of two routes.

1The eligibility conditions

  • Degree. A pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited program, or from a program outside the US that qualifies you to practice in that country.
  • License. A current, active pharmacist license or registration.
  • Experience in the past 7 years. A completed PGY1 residency, or at least 3 years of post-licensure practice with 50% or more of your time in pharmacotherapy activities from the content outline.
  • Fee. $600 for a first-time application (BPS dates and fees page, as of October 27, 2026); the full BCPS exam cost lists the other charges.

3What counts as qualifying practice

The practice route answers the search for “BCPS without residency”. BPS asks for at least 3 years of practice after licensure, inside the last 7 years, with half or more of your time spent on pharmacotherapy activities described in the content outline. That outline is broad: disease-state care across primary, secondary and tertiary specialty areas, treatment planning and monitoring, and professional practice such as medication safety, literature evaluation and quality improvement. The domain-by-domain study guide lists them.

An employer letter on letterhead confirms the experience. Before you ask for it, map a typical week against the outline so the person writing the letter can describe the pharmacotherapy share accurately rather than just your job title.

The 7-year look-back applies to both routes. A PGY1 finished nine years ago does not count on its own; in that case the practice route, built on recent years, is the one to document.

4Applying from outside the United States

International applicants follow the same process, pay the same $600 fee and sit the same exam against the same standard (BPS tips for applicants outside the U.S., as of October 27, 2026). If you are licensed or registered outside the US, Australia, Canada, Saudi Arabia or Singapore, you upload your transcript or a sealed certificate of graduation, plus proof of your license translated into English where needed. A current license in one of those five countries removes the graduation paperwork, even if you studied elsewhere.

4.1After you apply

BPS decides on a complete application within 30 calendar days. Approval brings an Authorization to Test (ATT), and you have 90 days from it to schedule and sit the exam (Candidate’s Guide, as of October 27, 2026). The exam is delivered at Pearson VUE centers; online testing needs prior BPS approval and is offered case by case in the US, Australia and Canada.

Other BPS specialties set the experience bar higher. BCACP, for example, asks for 4 years of practice, a PGY1 plus 2 years, or a PGY2 in ambulatory care (BCACP specifications, as of October 27, 2026); the BPS pharmacist board certifications compared covers the rest. For the full sequence from degree to recertification, see how to become a BCPS.

5Edge cases in eligibility

Can you get BCPS without a residency?

Yes. The practice route takes at least 3 years of post-licensure pharmacotherapy practice within the past 7 years, with 50% or more of your time in the content outline’s scope, confirmed by an employer letter (BPS specifications).

Does practice outside the US count?

It can. If the qualifying practice took place outside the US, Australia, Canada, Saudi Arabia or Singapore, BPS asks for a copy of your pharmacist license or registration for that period (BPS tips for applicants outside the U.S.).

Is there a separate fee for international applicants?

No separate fee is published. The first-time application is $600 for every applicant (BPS dates and fees page).

How soon after applying can I test?

BPS decides within 30 calendar days of a complete application, and the ATT gives you 90 days to sit the exam (Candidate’s Guide).
