Clinical pharmacist salary: what public wage data can and cannot tell you

Public wage data has no separate figure for clinical pharmacists or for BCPS holders. The closest number is the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) median for all pharmacists (SOC 29-1051): $140,910 a year in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, Pharmacists, as of October 27, 2026).

2What the BLS number covers, and what it leaves out

SOC 29-1051 is one occupation code for every pharmacist in the survey. Titles such as clinical pharmacist, clinical pharmacy specialist or clinical pharmacy manager have no line of their own, and BLS reports nothing by board certification. A page that quotes a pay figure tied to the credential is drawing on some other source.

A median is the midpoint: half the pharmacists in the survey earned more than $140,910 and half earned less. It is a national figure for May 2025. Setting, region, shift pattern and years of experience move individual offers in either direction.

Searches for clinical pharmacist pay by state, per hour, at entry level or in a specific specialty ask for cuts we have not verified against a primary source, so this page does not print them. An employer’s posted range for the exact role is a better guide than any national average.

3What BCPS does document

What the credential shows an employer is training and scope: a completed PGY1 or at least 3 years of pharmacotherapy practice, then an exam built from a 2023 job analysis of pharmacists in the field (BPS specifications, as of October 27, 2026). The BCPS eligibility requirements explain both routes.

BPS counts more than 31,580 BCPS holders on its certification page (live counter, as of October 27, 2026), against about 325,200 pharmacist jobs in the BLS count for 2025. The two numbers come from different sources and years, so read them as scale, not as a share. For the sequence from license to credential, see how to become a board certified pharmacotherapy specialist.

4What the data can answer

What is the average clinical pharmacist salary?

BLS does not publish one. Its closest figure is the median for all pharmacists, $140,910 a year in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). A median is the midpoint, which is not the same as an average.

Do BCPS pharmacists earn more?

No public wage source answers that. BLS does not report pay by board certification, and we do not publish unverified survey figures.

Is pharmacist employment growing?

BLS projects 5% employment growth for pharmacists from 2025 to 2035, from about 325,200 jobs in 2025 (BLS).
