1The route from PharmD to BCPS
Finish an accredited pharmacy degree
A degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), or from a program outside the US that qualifies you to practice there. It is the first of three conditions in the BPS BCPS examination specifications, as of October 27, 2026.
Hold a current license
An active pharmacist license or registration. BPS checks it when you apply, so renew before you submit.
Complete a PGY1 or three years of practice
Within the past 7 years: a completed PGY1 residency (ASHP-accredited or in candidate status, or a Canadian Pharmacy Residency Board year-1 program), or at least 3 years of post-licensure practice with 50% or more of your time in pharmacotherapy work the content outline covers. The BCPS eligibility requirements page sets the two routes side by side.
Apply and pay the fee
The first-time application costs $600 (BPS dates and fees page, as of October 27, 2026); the BCPS exam cost breakdown adds retake, rescheduling and withdrawal charges. BPS decides on a complete application within 30 calendar days.
Schedule and sit the exam
Approval brings an Authorization to Test, and from then you have 90 days to sit at a Pearson VUE center. Testing is continuous, so there is no seasonal window to wait for. The exam has 150 items, 125 of them scored, in 3 hours 45 minutes (Candidate’s Guide, as of October 27, 2026).
Maintain it through a 7-year cycle
A $125 maintenance fee in years 1 to 6 (same BPS fees page), then recertification by exam or continuing education in year 7.
2Clinical pharmacist is a job title, BCPS is a credential
Hospitals, health systems and clinics call a pharmacist a clinical pharmacist when the work is patient-facing: regimen review on rounds, renal dose adjustment, drug-level monitoring, anticoagulation or ambulatory clinics. No single exam creates that title. Each employer decides what the role requires, so read the posting before assuming board certification is either required or irrelevant.
BCPS documents the clinical side of that work against a public standard. BPS built the exam from a 2023 job analysis with 813 usable survey responses (BPS job analysis summary), and the content outline splits the scored items 36% patient care specialty areas, 36% therapeutics and patient management and 28% professional practice (BPS specifications). The BCPS study guide maps each domain to its disease areas and tasks.
BCPS is the broadest of the BPS pharmacist credentials. If most of your week is clinic work, the BCPS vs BCACP comparison shows how the ambulatory care outline and its experience rules differ. And if pay is part of the decision, the pharmacist wage data from BLS is the closest public figure; it covers all pharmacists and has no BCPS line.

4Fitting the exam around a full schedule
Board prep tends to land on top of a residency year or a full staffing rotation, and the free evenings you counted on shrink once the work starts. Treat that as a scheduling problem rather than a test of discipline, and plan around the hours you will really have.
Practice under the conditions you will meet. The exam moves forward only, with no skipping and no review, at about 1.5 minutes per item (Candidate’s Guide). Recognizing a disease and deciding between two plausible regimens under that clock are separate skills, and only cases build the second. The 8- and 12-week BCPS study plans put a case round in every week and end with a timed mock.
5Common questions on the route
How long does it take to become a clinical pharmacist with BCPS?
Count from licensure: one PGY1 year on the residency route, or at least 3 years of qualifying practice on the practice route, then up to 30 days for the application decision and up to 90 days to sit the exam (BPS specifications and Candidate’s Guide).
Is BCPS a license to practice?
No. It is a voluntary board certification. Your state license or registration is what lets you practice, and BPS requires it to be current when you apply.
How many pharmacists hold BCPS?
More than 31,580, according to the live counter on the BPS BCPS certification page.
Where is the BCPS exam given?
At Pearson VUE test centers. BPS allows online testing only with prior approval, case by case, for candidates in the US, Australia and Canada.
